The Melissa Willis Piano Studio provides a fun, creative and encouraging learning environment, allowing students of all ages and abilities to freely participate in and experience the enjoyment of music.
It is my belief that music should be accessible to all students, regardless of age or ability. I will help students set musical goals and provide them with the tools to successfully meet these goals. I accomplish this by providing individualized lesson plans that focus on the unique needs, personality and learning style of each student. As a result, my curriculum is varied and flexible. Even though all students will be exposed to the important elements of musical technique, theory and expression, it may occur through different avenues, i.e. choice of music, classical vs. popular repertoire, musical games, hands-on activities, manipulative learning tools and individual practice plans.
Throughout the learning process, I believe it essential for students to enjoy themselves while learning the importance and value of developing strong independent learning skills. I hope that lessons at the Melissa Willis Piano Studio will provide a springboard for a lifelong love of music – along with dedication and hard work; I encourage plenty of laughter and smiles. My students are not motivated by fear or harshness, but by discovering their own enjoyment and success to express themselves through music.
In addition to the personalized one-on-one instruction, students will also receive the opportunity to attend group classes and learn with their peers, use musical computer software to enhance their learning experience and participate in a variety of music festivals and recitals throughout the year. Popular festivals are those affiliated with the Indiana chapters of the Music Teacher’s National Association and the National Federation of Music Clubs. Some of the most popular recitals are “piano parties” (smaller, informal performances for 4-6 year olds or first time performers), the costume recital held each fall, the holiday recital during the holiday months and the pizza performance party held at the end of each summer. Of course, there is also a traditional and more formal spring recital held towards the end of each school year.
